The Turtle Who Carried the Sun - Buran Story

The Turtle Who Carried the Sun

March 16, 2026

Long ago, in the earliest days of the world, the land was dim and quiet. The Sun was weak and tired, rising only a little above the mountains each day before sinking back into the mist. Because of this, the valleys stayed cold, shadows lingered for long hours, and crops struggled to grow. The villagers worked hard, but without warmth and light, their lives were filled with worry.

Many animals lived in this land, each with their own strengths. The birds flew high and fast, the deer ran swiftly through the forest, and the monkeys climbed trees with ease. Yet none of them believed they could help the Sun. They said the problem was too great and far beyond them.

Among them lived an old turtle named Koma. His shell was worn smooth by time, and his steps were slow, but his eyes were thoughtful and kind. Koma spent his days near the river, watching the sky and listening to the whispers of the wind. While others complained about the darkness, Koma quietly believed that patience and determination could solve even the biggest problems.

One early morning, before the mist lifted, Koma made a decision. Without telling anyone, he began a journey toward the Sacred Mountain, where the Sun rested each night. The path was long and steep. Sharp stones cut his feet, rain soaked his shell, and cold winds tried to push him backward. Birds flew past him and laughed, saying,
“Why try? You are too slow.”

Koma did not answer. He moved forward one careful step at a time.

Days passed. Then weeks. At night, Koma rested beneath stars that barely shone. At dawn, he continued climbing. Though tired, he never gave up. At last, he reached the top of the mountain, where the Sun lay glowing faintly, heavy and exhausted.

With a gentle voice, Koma spoke to the Sun. He did not demand or complain. Instead, he offered help.
“I may be slow,” he said, “but I am strong, and I will carry you.”

Touched by Koma’s kindness, the Sun agreed. Carefully, the Sun settled onto Koma’s broad shell. Step by step, Koma began to climb higher into the sky. As he moved, the world below slowly changed. Light spread across fields and forests. Flowers opened, rivers sparkled, and people looked up in wonder.

By the time Koma reached the highest point, the land below was warm and alive. The Sun shone brighter than ever before. Grateful, the Sun promised to rise fully every day from that moment on, never forgetting the turtle’s sacrifice.

Koma returned quietly to the river, never asking for praise. But the villagers remembered. They told the story to their children and carved turtle symbols into stone, honoring patience, courage, and humility.

And from that day forward, the Sun rose high, lighting the world—thanks to a turtle who never gave up.

Moral of the story:
Great change often begins with small, patient steps.
